Using Simple Sequencing Words
When you want to describe the order of events in French, sequencing words help your listener or reader follow along. Use d'abord or tout d'abord to begin your explanation. These both mean “first” or “to start with.” To continue, you can use ensuite and puis, both of which translate as “then” or “next.” To show something comes before something else, use avant (“before”), and for something coming after, use après (“after”). Finish your sequence with enfin (“finally” or “at last”).
For example, when describing your morning routine:
- D'abord, je me réveille.
- Ensuite, je prends une douche.
- Puis, je prends mon petit-déjeuner.
- Après, je m'habille.
- Enfin, je vais à l'école.
Using Complex Sequencing Words
If you want to give a more detailed or formal sequence, add expressions like premièrement (“firstly”) and deuxièmement (“secondly”). For the very first thing in a formal explanation, tout d'abord is also used. End your longer explanations or arguments with finalement (“finally”), pour conclure (“to conclude”), or en résumé (“in summary”).
For example, when summarizing a process:
- Premièrement, il faut préparer les ingrédients.
- Deuxièmement, on mélange tout dans un bol.
- Ensuite, on fait cuire le mélange.
- Finalement, on laisse refroidir.
- En résumé, la recette est très simple.
Commonly, pour conclure comes right before a final summary statement:
- Pour conclure, l'expérience a été un succès.
Using these sequencing words, structure your speech or writing so your listener or reader clearly understands the order and logic of your ideas.
